The Hospital and Transplant Chaplaincy - Serving the heroes

Chaplaincy in the healthcare sector is our passion. The Hospital and Transplant Chaplaincy offers spiritual, moral and practical support to patients, their loved ones and health care professionals. We consider those involved in the various aspects of organ transplantation as people whom we owe focused attention and view them as true heroes.

An organ transplant embodies the synthesis between human ingenuity and God’s grace; it is science and miracle in harmony. Its value cannot be quantified and will be marveled over for every day added to one’s life.

- Cardiac patient after transplant

Cardiac patient on his bicycle

Avid Cape Town cyclist Gerard van Dyk crossed the USA by bicycle some time after a heart transplant. More than a decade after the operation he still regularly takes part in various sports events.

On any given day in South Africa individuals awaiting a heart transplant would be enough to form four rugby teams (but would be unable to play). Those awaiting a kidney transplant could fill four standard tour busses (with little prospect of touring), while people who need lung or liver transplants are equally numerous. Corneas, pancreas, bone marrow and other tissue is also constantly in demand. The daily lives of those involved are often filled with frustration and uncertainty.

Dedicated doctors, nurses and other medical personnel work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of these people. From the year 2000 to 2008 a total number of 7048 transplants were performed in our country. Organ transplant gives a new lease on life and those fortunate enough to have received an organ, as well as their loved ones and caregivers, need constant support to persevere with the regimen of care, medication, exercise and meaningful activity.

Whilst our organization is active in health care chaplaincy in general, the field of organ transplantation receives focused attention. Since a mature religious orientation can be a powerful source of encouragement and motivation, The Hospital and Transplant Chaplaincy aims to assist all those involved in transplantation and to tend to the religious needs of these heroes of humanity, medical science and often of faith.
